Mention Rate: Definition & Formula
Mention rate is the percentage of prompts, out of a fixed set run against an AI answer engine, in which your brand is named in the response — regardless of whether that mention includes a source citation. Formula: mention rate = (prompts where your brand is named) ÷ (total prompts run) × 100. It is the simplest of the AI-visibility metrics to measure, because it only requires tracking your own brand, not competitors.
Formula and worked example
Mention rate = (prompts where your brand is named) ÷ (total prompts run) × 100. Example: you run 200 prompts about "project management software" through ChatGPT. Your brand is named in 52 of the responses. Mention rate = 52 ÷ 200 × 100 = 26%. Rerun the identical 200 prompts next quarter; if named mentions rise to 70, mention rate moves to 35% — a real, comparable change because the prompt set didn't shift.
Mention rate vs. share of voice vs. citation rate
Mention rate measures whether you show up at all, independent of competitors. Share of voice measures your mentions as a percentage of total brand mentions across the same prompt set (a competitive ratio, not an absolute frequency). Citation rate measures the narrower case of a mention that comes with a clickable source link to your domain. See share of voice vs. mention rate vs. citation rate for the full comparison.
Why mention rate alone can be misleading
A high mention rate with a low share of voice usually means the whole category gets mentioned often (the prompt set is generous to everyone), not that your brand specifically stands out against rivals. In our 500-prompt benchmark, 96% of English-language prompts returned a citable AI answer at all — a high baseline coverage rate that makes mention rate alone a weak differentiator without also tracking competitor mentions and citation rate.
How to measure your own mention rate
Build a fixed set of real buyer-intent prompts in your category (50–500 is a reasonable range), run every prompt against each AI engine you care about, and record a simple named/not-named flag for your brand on each response. Divide named responses by total prompts run, per engine, and track the trend monthly rather than judging a single run — model outputs are non-deterministic, so a single low or high score can be noise rather than signal. For the full competitive-ratio version of this same measurement exercise, see how to calculate AI share of voice.
Report mention rate per engine as well as blended, since ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews draw from different sources and can produce very different results for the same brand and prompt set. A blended average can mask a real gap on the one engine your target buyers actually use.
