How to Improve AI Share of Voice

The fastest way to improve AI share of voice is to make your brand easier for a model to cite than your competitors: publish clear, factual, well-structured pages that directly answer the prompts your buyers ask, and build a genuine presence on the third-party sites — forums, reviews, comparison articles — that AI engines already trust and cite most, since 84% of citations in our sample went to user-generated content rather than brand sites.

1. Write answer-first, structured content

AI answer engines extract and cite content that states a clear answer early and organizes supporting facts under clear headings — the same structure this page uses. Avoid long narrative intros before the actual answer; lead with the number, the definition or the recommendation, then explain it.

2. Earn presence on the sources AI engines already cite

Since aggregators and UGC dominate citations in most verticals (average 9.6 sources per answer across our sample, with UGC making up 84% of them), a page ranking #1 on Google isn't enough — you need visibility on the forums, review sites and comparison pages the model is already pulling from. Prioritize the specific domains your vertical's benchmark shows as top-cited (see AI share of voice by industry).

3. Add facts a model can quote verbatim

Concrete numbers, named specifics and dated claims are easier for a model to lift into an answer than vague marketing language. A sentence like "our sample of 500 prompts and 2,000 model calls found an average of 9.6 cited sources per answer" is quotable in a way that "we have extensive industry data" is not.

4. Track mention rate and citation rate separately

Improvement work should be measured against the metric it actually targets: content restructuring mostly moves citation rate, while broader UGC presence mostly moves mention rate and share of voice. See share of voice vs. mention rate vs. citation rate for the distinctions, and re-run your prompt set monthly using the method in how to calculate AI share of voice.

5. Re-test on a fixed schedule, not ad hoc

Because AI answers are non-deterministic, a single improved answer doesn't confirm real progress. Rerun the same fixed prompt set on a monthly cadence and compare share of voice trend lines, not one-off snapshots, before crediting any single content change.

6. Prioritize by vertical, not a generic checklist

The mix of tactics that moves the needle differs by category. In verticals where aggregator sites dominate citations, direct outreach and listings on those aggregators may matter more than publishing new pages; in verticals where UGC and forums dominate, community presence and genuine reviews often outweigh on-site content changes. Check AI share of voice by industry for your category's aggregator and UGC split before deciding where to invest first.
