Share of Voice vs Mention Rate vs Citation Rate
Share of voice, mention rate and citation rate are related but distinct metrics: share of voice is your brand's percentage of total brand mentions in a category (a competitive ratio); mention rate is the percentage of prompts where your brand is named at all (an absolute frequency); and citation rate is the percentage of answers that include a clickable source link to your domain (a link-level metric). You typically need all three, because they answer different questions.
Mention rate: how often are you named at all
Mention rate = (prompts where your brand is named) ÷ (total prompts run) × 100. It's a single-brand metric — it doesn't require tracking competitors, which makes it the easiest of the three to start measuring. Across our 500-prompt sample, average AI-answer coverage (the share of prompts that returned a citable answer at all) was 96% in English, so most prompts do generate an answer worth checking for your brand's name.
Citation rate: are you a linked source, not just named
Citation rate narrows further to answers that include an actual source link to your domain, as opposed to being named in passing without a citation. This matters because AI engines like Google AI Overviews and Perplexity often attach a visible source list, and appearing in that list drives referral traffic the way a naked brand mention doesn't. In our sample, the average answer cited 9.6 sources, and 84% of those citations pointed to user-generated content rather than brand sites — meaning citation rate for most brands is meaningfully lower than mention rate.
Share of voice: the competitive ratio
Share of voice takes mention rate one step further by putting it in competitive context: your mentions as a percentage of everyone's mentions in the same prompt set, not just a percentage of prompts run. A brand can have a respectable mention rate (named in 30% of prompts) but a weak share of voice if five competitors are each named in 40–60% of the same prompts.
When to use each metric
Use mention rate as your baseline health check — are you showing up at all. Use citation rate to gauge referral-traffic potential and technical AI-visibility (is your content structured so engines can cite it). Use share of voice for competitive reporting — the number you'd put in front of a CMO to show standing relative to named rivals.
